Our NFS 2007 Photo Calendar shows you a great reason to visit (or move to!) Spain every month of the year. All of the large, colourful photos come from my personal collection, gathered over 8 years of wandering through this beautiful country. Much better than the usual calendars you see in the shops at this time of year, because, like everything else in the new Notes Shop, this one also helps support Notes from Spain! 😉
During the first weekend of October of even years (2006, 2008 etc), Tarragona bullring holds one of the most bizarre spectacles to be found in Spain, the ‘Concurso de Castells’, the human castles competition. Every year there are serious injuries as these towers topple to the ground, the worst of which led to the death of a twelve-year-old girl earlier this month in Capgrossos de Mataró (Barcelona), when she fell from the top of a nine-story castle.
Marina and I spent the weekend in Galicia attending a wedding. While the priest delivers the sermon a villager observes from a side chapel. More tomorrow in a podcast from our trip. Photo by Ben.
Not all Spain, maybe, but a lot of it. There’s the coffee machine, that hissing, steaming, rattling altar piece found in every Spanish bar, the fans, with all their connotations of the ‘old Spain’ that you still find in evidence everywhere today, and the ‘Nunca Mais’ sticker, written in Gallego but proudly displayed here in Madrid, a protest against an oil spill that saw people from all over Spain flocking to Galicia to help each other out. Last weekend we were in the Mediterranean resort of Gandia, on the Costa Blanca. This photo was taken at night, when people were on their way out to supper. Photo by Ben.
I’ve been inspired to start taking lots of photos of Madrid again. This one above is of a grandmother walking her granddaughter home in the barrio of La Latina. When Marina saw the image she pointed out that it could easily have been taken 50 years, ago… one of the wonderful things about Spain, the past is still there, floating just beneath the surface… Photo by Ben.
