Macho politicians

The majority of female politicians walked out of the Spanish parliament on Wednesday after remarks by PP spokesman Eduardo Zaplana towards the deputy prime minister, Maria Teresa Fernandez de la Vega.

Referring to her donning traditional African costume as part of an official visit to Mozambique, he said, ‘How much parliament would gain if you, as one who is so fond of dressing up from time to time, would for one day, even just a day, dress up as the deputy prime minister and do your duties.’

What amazed us though, is that despite the very reasonable demonstration by the women in the face of this chauvinist diatribe, not one male politician had the ‘huevos’ to get up and leave in support as well. It’s obviously still very much ‘us and them’ in Spain, even when there is political gain to be made…

The Macro Botellon

Those naugthy Spanish teenagers are planning a macro-botellon (mass outdoor drinking session) across Spain tonight as a two-fingers up to the authorities. These ‘botellons’ were outlawed several years ago after complaints from residents that were fed up with raucous behaviour, and vomiting and urinating all over their neighbourhood plazas and parks.

Police are ready to fight back with 300 Euro spot fines and the parliarment is even considering an emergency change in the law to ensure the minimum drinking age is set to 18 all over Spain. But is this all media hype? Only tomorrow’s papers will tell…

Spain Audio on theworld.org

PRI’s The World has some great reports from Spain that you can listen to over the net. I particularly liked these short reports on: El Gordo Lottery, Flamenco (in Boston!), Electric cars in Cordoba, and, my favourite, human castle madness (photos here).

Thanks got to Beth for letting me know about these. Remember, if you know about any interesting material on Spain, please contact me and hopefully I can spread the word on the blog.

Did Al Qaida finsih off ETA 2 years ago?

The Guardian has an interesting article on the repercussions of the March 11th bombings two years ago. I wish we had been podcasting then. We were living 100 m from Atocha station when the bombs went off, without doubt the most shocking few days of my life… and I was just an unaffected bystander…

One last photo from India, and hints from Spain…

OK, so this is Notes from Spain, and we are going to get back to podcasting from Spain just as soon as we can. Right after we get back from one more trip to Oxford this weekend! Plus, keep an eye out for a couple of exciting new projects in the pipeline. Let’s just say there’ll be more in Spanish and a lot more on food!

Until then, one last pic from India: phoning Spain from the backpackers paradise of Palolem Beach (photo by my father). What a place to make a call! Did you hear the India podcast yet? Or see the photos?

[Download MP3]

At last, the India podcast. I hope it conveys the outstanding time I had in those two weeks.

Click here to see the photos.

Thanks again to all that sponsored me – all the money I raised through your generous donations, 1750 pounds sterling (half the cost of the trip), went directly to the charities you hear about at the end of the podcast: The Rainbow Trust, The Mother Theresa Educational And Charitable Society, and the World Wild Life Fund.

Let me know what you think in the comments below, and if you are interested in taking part in Enduro India, then see their web page.

Luzia – Paco de Lucia

This was my first introduction to the Flamenco guitar legend Paco de Lucia, and having listened to most of his albums since, this still stands as my long term favorite. It transcends earlier, more traditional albums, with Paco somehow managing to make it sound like he’s playing up to 3 guitars at the same time, jumping from pulse racing tracks that get me jumping out of my chair, to slower, more intense and emotionally charged works. Not one for the traditionalists perhaps, but certainly an evocative, emotional introduction to the skills of the world’s greatest Flamenco guitarist. (If you need more convincing, just check out the reviews via the Amazon.com link below.)
